They live in Sub-Saharan Africa. Lions are the only social big cat, forming “pride”. Pride is family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young.Only male lions have manes. Their massive limbs built more for attack than running. Most lions drink water daily if available but can go for 4 or 5 days without water. Females are the main hunters in the pride and males patrol, mark, and guard the pride’s territory and cubs while females are hunting. A lion spends 20-21 hours per day sleeping, napping, and resting. They can run up to 50 mph for short distances and leap as far as 36 feet (11m). A lion roar can be heard up to 5 miles away (8 Km).
Although beautiful, these magnificent creatures are on the edge of becoming endangered and are now listed as vulnerable. They are facing many threats such as Canned hunting/ Game Hunting /Trophy Hunting – Trophy hunting kills around 600 male lions a year, Habitat destruction, Human-animal conflict, Illegal pet trade, Illegal wildlife trade, and Circus cruelty. Now fewer than 20,000 individuals left, it is assumed the population has decreased more than 90% in the last decade alone! What can you do to protect the lions? Support to ban canned/game/ trophy hunting, never buy any products made by lion parts, do not keep lions as pets, and If you know of any information on poaching or illegal wildlife trade inform the responsible authorities and Spread these conservation messages.
