South African Fur Seal

Content Image

Scientific Name: Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Also known as the Cape fur seal, this species is the largest fur seal in the world.
  • Their fur has two layers, a soft undercoat and long guard hairs, making it highly insulating.
  • They are incredibly playful and social, often forming large colonies on beaches and rocky coasts.
  • Their powerful flippers allow them to leap gracefully from the water, almost like aquatic acrobats.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

South African fur seals have stable populations, but they still face threats from fishing gear, pollution, and marine habitat loss. Through education and awareness, Emirates Park Zoo encourages visitors to make ocean-friendly choices that support marine conservation worldwide.
