Scientific Name: Trachemys scripta elegans

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Red-eared slides are almost entirely aquatic, but as they are cold-blooded, they leave the water to sunbathe to regulate their temperature.
  • They have poor hearing but good vision and are very sensitive to vibrations. When startled or threatened, they will quickly slide off rocks/logs back into the water.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Red-eared sliders are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, climate change, road deaths, predation on eggs and hatchlings, disease, and human activities like the pet trade and habitat disturbance.
