Male Horsfield tortoises tend to be a little smaller than females and have longer tails which they tend to tuck into the side of their shell.
Horsfield’s tortoises are distinctively known for having only four toes on their front feet, unlike most other tortoises that have five, making it a key identification feature and earning them names like the “four-toed tortoise” or “four-clawed tortoise”.

Horsfield’s tortoise is currently listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is primarily threatened by habitat loss and over-exploitation for the pet trade.
