Scientific Name: Stigmochelys pardalis

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The leopard tortoises that come from areas around Ethiopia and Somalia can get much bigger. These ones will reach lengths of 75 cm and can tip the scales at roughly 39 kg!
  • This species gets its name from the yellow and black spots on their shell. As they age, these markings fade to a uniform brown or grey.

Leopard tortoises are seen throughout their geographic range as agricultural pests, and because of this, retaliatory killings do happen. They are also a staple food item for many local people.
