African Lions

Scientific Name: Panthera leo

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Lions are famously relaxed, but with good reason! To conserve energy for hunting and defending their territory, they can sleep or rest for up to 20 hours a day. This laid-back lifestyle helps them stay sharp for short but intense bursts of activity when chasing prey.
  • Despite their calm demeanor during the day, lions are capable of explosive speed. They can sprint up to 80 km/h, though only for brief distances. This lightning-fast dash, combined with their muscular build and sharp reflexes, makes them formidable hunters, especially at night when their vision is six times better than a human’s.
  • One of the most iconic traits of a lion is its thunderous roar. It’s not just for show, this roar can be heard from up to 8 kilometers away, serving as a powerful warning to rivals and a rallying call for members of the pride. It’s nature’s version of surround sound, echoing across the savanna.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Lion populations have plummeted by more than 40% over the past three generations, making their future increasingly uncertain. This alarming decline is largely due to habitat loss and illegal hunting. To ensure lions continue to roam the wild for generations to come, it is essential that we protect their natural habitats and strengthen efforts to combat poaching and wildlife trafficking. Every step we take toward conservation helps secure a future for these iconic big cats.
