Bengal Tiger

Scientific name: Panthera tigris tigris

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The Bengal tiger is one of the most iconic big cats in the world, and it’s most commonly found in India’s forests and mangroves. Each Bengal tiger has a unique pattern of stripes, no two are the same, just like human fingerprints!
  • Bengal tigers are powerful swimmers and often cool off in rivers, a behavior that sets them apart from many other big cats. Despite their strength and adaptability, they face growing threats from habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict, making conservation efforts all the more vital.

THE WHITE TIGER

This subspecies is the only one known to naturally produce white tigers, individuals born from a genetic mutation that gives them pale coats with dark stripes. Their rarity is often exploited through selective breeding, highlighting the importance of ethical practices and conservation efforts to protect genetic diversity within their natural range.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Habitat loss and human conflict threaten Bengal tigers, the most numerous of all tiger subspecies. Ecotourism and education can help raise awareness and support vital efforts to protect their forests and ensure their survival in their natural habitat.
