Blue-Tongued Skink

Content Image

Scientific Name: Tiliqua gigas

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Blue-tongued skinks are medium-to-large lizards with a stout body, short legs, and a distinct bright blue tongue that they display to scare predators.
  • Unlike most reptile species, these skinks do not lay eggs. Instead, they are ovoviviparous, meaning they give birth to live young encased in membranous sacs.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

In the wild, blue-tongued skinks face several threats, mainly caused by humans. Habitat loss from farming, housing, and road building reduces the places they can live and find food. They are also threatened by introduced predators such as cats, dogs, and foxes, which hunt them more easily than native predators.
