Corn Snake

Content Image

Scientific Name: Pantherophis guttatus

DID YOU KNOW?

  • When corn snakes feel threatened, they may hiss or shake their tails, imitating the behavior of venomous rattlesnakes. However, they are non-venomous and use this mimicry to scare away potential predators.
  • Corn snakes climb trees or bushes to hunt for prey. In areas in which the primary diet is rodents, they also spend time underground in the burrows of their prey. When they are not hunting, they spend much of their time basking on rocks.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Although Corn Snakes are currently listed as Least Concern, they face threats from habitat loss, road mortality, and collection for the pet trade. Protecting natural habitats and promoting coexistence with native wildlife helps ensure the continued survival of this beneficial species.
