Eurasian Brown Bear

Scientific name: Ursus arctos arctos

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The Eurasian brown bear is one of the largest carnivores in Europe and Asia, and it’s surprisingly fast—able to run up to 50 km/h, even outpacing a horse in short sprints. This speed, combined with their keen sense of smell and strength, makes them skilled foragers capable of covering vast distances in search of food.
  • These bears are also remarkable diggers, using their long, powerful claws to move rocks, shift logs, and break through tough soil or rocky terrain. This ability is especially important when making dens for hibernation, as they need secure and insulated spaces to survive the winter. Their digging not only shapes their environment but also helps aerate soil, making them vital contributors to their ecosystems.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Protecting forests and reducing human-bear conflict is essential for the long-term survival of Eurasian brown bears. As human development expands, it’s critical to preserve natural habitats and promote coexistence through education and responsible land use. Conservation efforts help ensure these iconic animals remain a thriving part of the natural landscape.
