DID YOU KNOW?

  • Male Horsfield tortoises tend to be a little smaller than females and have longer tails which they tend to tuck into the side of their shell.
  • Horsfield’s tortoises are distinctively known for having only four toes on their front feet, unlike most other tortoises that have five, making it a key identification feature and earning them names like the “four-toed tortoise” or “four-clawed tortoise”.

Horsfield’s tortoise is currently listed as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is primarily threatened by habitat loss and over-exploitation for the pet trade.
