Scientific Name: Erythrocebus patas

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Patas monkeys are the fastest primates on land, reaching speeds of up to 55 km/h, that’s cheetah-level energy for a monkey!
  • They’re sometimes called “the dancing monkeys” because of their long limbs and high-speed sprinting style.
  • Patas monkeys usually live in open grasslands, which is unusual for primates, they prefer wide, open spaces over dense forests.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Patas monkeys face growing challenges in the wild due to habitat loss, hunting, and human–wildlife conflict. Although their populations are currently stable, they’re increasingly impacted by shrinking grasslands and competition for resources.
