Ruppell’s Fox

Content Image

Scientific Name: Vulpes rueppelli

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Rüppell’s foxes are built for the desert. Their big ears help them stay cool, and the fur on their feet protects them from hot sand.
  • This fox is mainly nocturnal, spending the day in burrows dug in sand or gravel and emerging at night to hunt. Their excellent sense of hearing and sharp eyesight help them detect prey moving under the sand or in the dark.
  • They come in different colors. Most are sandy-colored to blend in, but some are gray, which helps them hide in rocky areas.
  • People sometimes confuse them with fennec foxes, but Rüppell’s foxes are a little bigger and have gray markings on their face and a bushy tail with a white tip.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Rüppell’s foxes help keep rodent and insect populations under control. These pests can spread disease and damage crops, so the foxes are actually helping people, too.

In many parts of the Middle East and North Africa, Rüppell’s foxes live close to people, often near farms or villages. When tolerated and protected, they thrive, helping to control pests while adding to the natural heritage of the region.
