Siberian Tiger

Scientific name: Panthera tigris altaica

DID YOU KNOW?

  • The Siberian tiger, also known as the Amur tiger, holds the title of the largest tiger subspecies, and in fact, it’s the biggest cat in the world! Native to the cold, snowy forests of eastern Russia and parts of northeast China, the Siberian tiger is built for survival in harsh climates. It has a thicker coat and a layer of fat that helps it endure freezing temperatures.
  • Like all tigers, each individual has its own unique set of stripes, helping researchers identify them in its natural range. Although once on the brink of extinction, strong conservation efforts have helped Siberian tiger numbers slowly recover. However, their population remains vulnerable, and continued protection of their forest habitat is critical for their long-term survival.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

With only around 500 left in the wild, the Siberian tiger is critically endangered. Habitat loss and poaching remain serious threats. Conservation programs and anti-poaching efforts are vital to protect this majestic predator and the fragile forest ecosystem it calls home.
