Six-Banded Armadillo

Content Image

Scientific Name: Euphractus sexcinctus

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Despite the name, six-banded armadillos actually have 6–8 movable bands on their protective armor plates.
  • Their shell is made of bone and keratin, the same material as your fingernails!
  • They are excellent diggers and can create burrows in minutes.
  • When threatened, they don’t roll into a ball, instead, they dig rapidly, using the earth as a shield.

EVERY SPECIES COUNT

Although currently listed as Least Concern, six-banded armadillos face increasing threats such as habitat loss, road accidents, and illegal hunting. At Emirates Park Zoo, we help raise awareness about the importance of protecting these unique mammals and the ecosystems they support.
